Soil Coverage Guide

How Much Soil Do I Need?

For different project types:

  • Garden beds: 4-6 inches depth (1.2-1.9 cubic yards per 100 sq ft)
  • Raised beds: 8-12 inches depth (2.5-3.7 cubic yards per 100 sq ft)
  • Lawn topdressing: 1/4-1/2 inch depth (0.08-0.15 cubic yards per 100 sq ft)
  • New lawns: 4-6 inches depth (1.2-1.9 cubic yards per 100 sq ft)

Soil Application Tips

  • For new garden beds, remove existing vegetation before adding soil
  • When filling raised beds, consider adding a layer of gravel at the bottom for drainage
  • Mix compost with existing soil for better results in established gardens
  • For lawn areas, spread soil evenly and rake smooth before seeding or sodding

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between your soil products?

Our topsoil is screened and ready for planting. Soil conditioner improves soil structure and drainage. Organic compost adds nutrients and beneficial microorganisms. The Compost Blend combines compost and soil conditioner for nutrient-rich plant growth. The Baxter Blend combines topsoil, soil conditioner, and organic compost for an optimal growing medium. Yard leveling mix is ideal for lawn repair, and screened fill dirt is best for filling low areas.

How much soil do I need for a raised bed?

For raised beds, we recommend a depth of 8-12 inches of soil. Our calculator will help you determine the exact amount based on your bed's dimensions. As a rule of thumb, a 4'x8' raised bed with 12" depth requires about 1.2 cubic yards of soil.

Can I mix different soil products?

Yes! Many gardeners achieve the best results by mixing different soil products. For example, mixing topsoil with compost creates an excellent growing medium. Our Baxter Blend is a pre-mixed combination that works well for most garden applications.

Do you deliver the exact amount I calculate?

We deliver soil in full cubic yard increments. Our calculator automatically rounds up to the nearest whole cubic yard, as this is how we sell our products.

How do I prepare my area before adding new soil?

For garden beds, remove existing vegetation and loosen the soil beneath. For lawn areas, remove debris and rake the area smooth. For raised beds, ensure proper drainage at the bottom. If you're topdressing an existing lawn, mow the grass short before application.
